Ferenc Juhasz – Birth Of A Foal

As May was opening the rosebuds,

elder and lilac beginning to bloom,

it was time for the mare to foal.

She’d rest herself, or hobble lazily

after the boy who sang as he led her

to pasture, wading through the meadowflowers.

They wandered back at dusk, bone-tired,

the moon perched on a blue shoulder of sky.

Then the mare lay down,

sweating and trembling, on her straw in the stable.

The drowsy, heavy-bellied cows

surrounded her, waiting, watching, snuffing.

Later, when even the hay slept

and the shaft of the Plough pointed South,

the foal was born. Hours the mare

spent licking the foal with its glue-blind eyes.

And the foal slept at her side,

a heap of feathers ripped from a bed.

Straw never spread as soft as this.

Milk or snow never slept like a foal.

Dawn bounced up in a bright red hat,

waved at the world and skipped away.

Up staggered the foal,

its hooves were jelly – knots of foam.

Then day sniffed with its blue nose

through the open stable window, and found them –

the foal nuzzling its mother,

velvet fumbling for her milk.

Then all the trees were talking at once,

chickens scrabbled in the yard,

like golden flowers

envy withered the last stars.

adjustment into darkness

from memphis to eleusis

found his place in harbor lighthouse,

after challenges underground

proved his worth more than stoic penis

wrapped in demeter’s poppies,

his light house

the only light he knew

had no lover to share,

so wished to discover others,

red mullet of extraordinary size

spoke to him of those that make love

on the beaches at night,

he was being called on to do

serapis whispered over pillows

into sleeping ears

keeping the light bright with oil

sent out that red mullet

scaled fish of land and sea

and it would return,

raising from the sea

with line and hook

secured the writhing eel

of couple snatched from sand

they became his lovers for the night

venting lust and sadism on both,

be it man man or woman love to be

extracted,

when done said his prayers to

the face of apis

tormented by pain,

then with surgical practice

cut them and fed them to the

mullet that sang,

the time would come

when fish and man would

indulge in passion,

his sperm food for the vitellogenesis

and his spawn

would find other oceans

to claim their own

deeper dark star fury

takes up the hurrying wind,

purity lost beneath the moon

misty champagne breath

keeps the flow

and warm ones eyes,

flash and hold,

adore me now or die

happy rays

reach sinew and bone,

beguiled so beguiled

by brighter grasp of desire,

fire and malice

forge the steel that cuts

the bonds of spanked behind

erotocise the far out stars

roses wanted only for the kiss,

hey harmony sing and

conceal wine impassioned veins,

sing one more time

the glory and the gem

of our dark hearts,

brutal tug of hair

claimed on oceans shore,

love an orphan of friendship

ceaseless and perverse,

liberty burnt over ashes

in her thrall i am

beat beat beat,

the frenzied imps of fire

in desperate crouch

of soul
